Services

We specialize in the assessment and treatment of depression and anxiety disorders, especially major depression, panic disorder, and social phobia. Services at the Psychology Clinic may be appropriate for you if you are currently experiencing symptoms associated with one of these disorders:

Depression

Your life isn't what it used to be. There is some sense of darkness and confusion. The things that used to bring you joy don't help now. You know there is a problem, but it is difficult to muster up the energy to do anything about it.

Symptoms may include: Sadness, hopelessness and/or irritation; Loss of interest and in activities; Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much; Problems with your appetite or the tendency to eat too much; Difficulty concentrating; and Diminished self-esteem.

Panic Disorder

It comes from out of the blue, a rush of sensations: you are afraid; you have difficulty breathing; your heart pounds; you feel dizzy, unsteady; you experience a moving wave of heat, chills or both. You are not sure if you are going to die; you feel you might be going crazy. And then it's all gone... except for the fear that it will happen again.

Symptoms may include: Pounding or racing heart; Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; Sweating, chills or hot flushes; Chest pain or pressure; Nausea or upset stomach; Trembling or shaking; and Fear of losing control, of going crazy or of dying.

Social Phobia

You are overwhelmed by anxiety and/or self-consciousness in everyday work or social situations. You have an ongoing fear of being watched or judged by others. You believe you will be embarrassed or humiliated by what you say or do, and the anxiety is so severe it interferes with work, school, and other ordinary activities.

Symptoms may include: Daily fear you will do something embarrassing; Fear of meeting new people; Sweating, blushing or trembling when you sense that others are watching you; Difficulty speaking in front of others; Fear of giving presentations, or being called on in class, or speaking up at meetings; The sense that all eyes are focused on you; and Avoidance of social activities, or of work or school functions because of your fear and anxiety.

If one or more of these descriptions sounds familiar, the Psychology Clinic may be an appropriate match for your needs. All services begin with an initial intake assessment and feedback session followed by individual, couples or group psychotherapy if appropriate.

Initial Assessment

The initial assessment consists of one or two sessions in which a clinician asks general questions about the problems currently being experienced. Based on the information gathered, a list of treatment options are generated and then shared with the client during a feedback session, which occurs shortly after the initial intake session(s). Treatment options at the Psychology Clinic can include individual and/or group psychotherapy, as described below. Referrals to other local mental health care providers may also be made, when appropriate.

Individual Psychotherapy

Individual psychotherapy is generally available to adolescents and adults who suffer from the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and panic disorder. We specialize in time-limited interventions that use principles from cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Individual psychotherapy typically includes one 50-minute session per week for 12-16 weeks. Specific arrangements may vary slightly and are collaboratively negotiated once therapy begins.

Group Psychotherapy Services

Psychotherapy groups start at different times throughout the year and may be done either alone or with in conjunction with individual therapy. Like individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy is a time-limited intervention that use principles from cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Group psychotherapy typically includes one 1-2 hour session per week for 12-16 weeks, and group sizes may range from 3-6 people.

Community Outreach Services: Schools, Organizations & Businesses

Clinicians at the Psychology Clinic provide ongoing assessment and intervention services for a variety of local community organizations, including schools, businesses, and local community groups. Specific services vary widely from site to site. Inquires should be made to the Clinic Coordinator.
